Dover vs. New Philadelphia: the rivalry

More than 120 meetings between the Crimson Tornadoes and the Quakers — one of Ohio's oldest high school football rivalries.

Last updated:

Where it started

Dover and New Philadelphia first met on the football field in 1896, during William McKinley's presidency. New Philadelphia won that first game 18–0. Early meetings were irregular, but the teams have played every year since 1921.

By the numbers

Going into the 121st meeting in 2024, Dover led the all-time series 59–52–9. Depending on how it's counted, the game is ranked among the three to five most-played rivalries in Ohio.

Woody Hayes and the stadiums

Before Ohio State, Woody Hayes coached New Philadelphia from 1938 to 1940; the Quakers' home field is now Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium. Dover hosts at Crater Stadium, and the game alternates between the two.

Long-time Dover coach Dan Ifft has led the Tornadoes through decades of rivalry nights. Dover won in 2021 (24–7) and 2023 (20–13).

The series record changes every fall — figures here are as of the 2024 game.
